Frederick C. Smith

Frederick C. Smith is vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for 21st Century Energy. He is responsible for the management of the Institute’s programs, operations, and initiatives. Smith assists President and CEO Karen Harbert in advancing the Institute's mission and policies before energy stakeholders, policymakers, and the public.

Smith brings more than 30 years of senior management experience in business and government to the Institute. Prior to coming to the Chamber, he was president and CEO of Siemens Government Services, Inc.

From 2003 to 2004, Smith served as senior advisor on the Coalition Provisional Authority staff in Iraq. At the Pentagon, he was principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs; deputy assistant secretary of defense for Asia-Pacific; and director of Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs in the Department of Defense. He was also a visiting professor at the National Defense University and at the United States Naval Academy. Smith served as an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1972.

Smith graduated from Bucknell University in 1969 and did his graduate work at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He and his wife, Tegwin, live in Alexandria, Virginia. They have two married daughters and four grandchildren.
